Readers with L. Maretta (Author)

L. Maretta is a very awesome, lovely, and amazing writer. Her books Whatever it Takes and Falling from Disgrace are crazy good! I hope one day I can actually meet, but I am still totally fine with her being my adopted Twitter mommy. LOL Yes.....she already knows cause I told her to adopt me :) I also love that she is a Shoe Queen and Music Lover!!!

L. Maretta was so sweet to share her favorite book and why she loves it so very much. So just an FYI I totally added it to my TBR list!!!!!

Asking me to pick a favorite book, or even an author for that matter, is like asking a mother to choose her favorite child; it just can’t be done.  I’ve read thousands of books in my lifetime and I cannot say that only one stands out as my beloved.  My list of favorites is long and eclectic and so, like the rebel I am, I am going to stray from Ms. Bonney’s assignment and share a book I had the pleasure of reading recently rather than trying to come up with my number one.

Dark as Night, by Mark T. Conard, is a gem of a novel.   I met Mark through Twitter and came to know a little about a witty and clearly intelligent man.  As an indie author myself, I always like to support my comrades and so I gave his book a try.  I was so glad that I did.
Dark as Night is a story that centers around several characters, all of whom are connected by one thread: the Philly mob.  A botched burglary, a failed suicide attempt, an assault on a young girl, a crooked cop, a sordid affair between coworkers, and a wanna-be gangster all come together in this tale of segmented stories. These stories, however, mesh together in the conclusion and leave you breathless.

What I loved most about this novel were the characters.  As a writer, I know the difficulty in developing them three-dimensionally through words and the fact that Conard did it so well is a testament to his talent.  Many play a part in his story but you get to know each and every one of them so that by a third of the way in you’ll be thinking, “What a typical Lenny thing to say.”

The story is fast-paced, gritty, descriptive, dark, sometimes funny, and always entertaining.  I am so glad I not only made a new friend in Mark, but also found a new author to add to my list of faves.
